Google Commerce Guide Explained

I am not Google.  This blog is not in any way endorsed by Google.

I am Brian A. Smith, the CEO of SingleFeed.

Google Commerce Guide aims to be the authoritative source (behind Google) for all of Google’s ecommerce related activities.

Google has always been a player in ecommerce.  While Google might not be at the top of the Internet Retailer 500 list, Google drives more transactions to online retailers than any other source on the web.   Because of this, I consider Google the largest player in ecommerce.  Over the last 8 years, Google has experimented with ecommerce.  Early on Google developed Froogle, a shopping comparison engine.  Froogle has mature greatly throughout the years and is now known as Google Shopping or Google Product Search, powered by Google Merchant Center (the old Google Base).  While there are signs of ecommerce life elsewhere in the Google-verse, most merchants, analysts, and pundits have not put together all the pieces.  That’s where the Google Commerce Guide comes in.

Google Merchant Center is the hub for Google’s ecommerce ambitions, with the main spoke currently tied to Google Shopping or Google Merchant Center.  However, there are many other spokes with sign of ecommerce life.  Most notably: Google AdWords, Google Affiliate Network, Google Commerce Search, Google Places, Google Mobile, and Google Checkout. All of these Google services have at least nascent ecommerce components.

Google Commerce Guide will cover everything related to Google’s commerce ambitions, providing explanations, examples, and commentary with the hopes of reading the tea leaves and helping everyone make sense of this ever expanding opportunity.
